Families are gathering across generations. Milestone celebrations are moving from “someday” to “now.” Bucket-list journeys are being prioritized over shorter, less memorable trips.

These observations aren’t anecdotal. They’re confirmed by the latest Virtuoso Network Pulse Survey, one of the most respected barometers in luxury travel. Twice a year, Virtuoso surveys thousands of member travel advisors and global partners to assess booking trends, traveler behavior, and emerging preferences.

The January 2026 survey included more than 1,400 advisors and over 900 travel partners worldwide — and we were proud to be among the participating advisors contributing insight from our own client experiences.

Here’s what luxury travelers are booking more of in 2026 — and why it matters.

Multi-Generational and Family Travel Leads the Way

The strongest reported growth category is multi-generational and family travel. More families are choosing to gather children, grandchildren, and extended relatives for shared experiences abroad.

These journeys are about more than vacations — they’re about legacy moments. River cruises, private villa stays, safari lodges, and small-group guided journeys are especially well suited for these kinds of celebrations because they combine comfort, curated experiences, and built-in flexibility.

Interestingly, while we’ve arranged multi-generational travel for many of our clients, Carol and I had not yet experienced it firsthand ourselves. As you know, we strongly prefer to sample experiences before recommending them.

Luxury Ocean and River Cruising Remain Strong

Premium and luxury ocean cruising continues to show substantial growth, along with river cruising and small-ship expedition voyages. Travelers appreciate the combination of ease, enrichment, and immersive destination access.

Small-ship experiences in particular are attracting attention because they offer curated itineraries, fewer guests, and access to unique ports that larger ships simply cannot reach.

Safari, Wildlife, and Adventure Travel Gain Momentum

Interest in safari and wildlife-focused travel has increased notably over the past six months. Travelers are prioritizing once-in-a-lifetime journeys that feel transformative — not just scenic.

From East African safaris to polar expeditions and cultural immersion trips, there is clear momentum toward travel that creates lasting personal impact.

Travelers Are Thinking Differently About How They Travel
