For thousands of years, it has been a maritime tradition for a new ship to have a ceremonial godmother. The godmother names the ship and offers good wishes for the safety of its guests and crew.
Who Was Haki?
The name Haki reaches back into Norse mythology. Haki was a formidable king who commanded a large force of warriors, defeated the Swedish army at the Battle of Fýrisvellir, and ruled as King of Sweden for three years.
It is a fitting name for a new Viking Longship—one that connects the ship to the rich Nordic heritage that has always been at the heart of the Viking story. Built in 2026, Viking Haki will welcome just 190 guests, offering the intimate, destination-focused river experience Viking is so well known for.
On October 15, 2026, Carol and I will participate in Viking’s joint naming ceremony in Amsterdam, where Viking Haki will officially join Viking’s growing river fleet.
After the ceremony, Carol and I will sail on a special mini voyage through the waterways of Holland aboard the newly named ship.
I could not be more proud of Carol. This invitation is a beautiful recognition of the relationship we have built with Viking over the many years.
