BE INFORMED

What U.S. Travelers Need to Know About Europe’s New Entry/Exit System (EES)

Starting in October 2025, travelers from the U.S. and other non-EU countries will experience a new process when entering and exiting most European countries. It’s called the Entry/Exit System (EES), and while it won’t require major effort on your part, it’s important to understand what’s changing — especially if you plan to visit Europe in late 2025 or beyond.

At Roaming Boomers Travel Services, our goal is to keep you informed and make your travels seamless. Here’s what you need to know about EES before your next European adventure.

What Is the Entry/Exit System (EES)?

The EES is an automated border control system being introduced by the European Union to replace traditional passport stamping. Instead of relying on inked entry and exit stamps, EES will electronically track:

  • Your name and passport details
  • Entry and exit dates and locations
  • A facial image and four fingerprints

The system is designed to streamline border checks, reduce fraud, and ensure compliance with EU short-stay rules.

Who Does the EES Apply To?

EES applies to non-EU nationals who do not need a visa to enter the Schengen Area. That includes travelers from the U.S., Canada, Australia, and many other countries visiting for tourism, business, or family travel.

If you’re traveling on a U.S. passport for a short-term stay (up to 90 days within a 180-day period), EES applies to you.

What Will Change at the Border?

Instead of getting your passport stamped, you’ll go through an automated process at border control, where:

  • Your passport will be scanned
  • Your biometric data (photo and fingerprints) will be recorded
  • Your movements will be logged digitally

The process will take a few extra minutes the first time you travel under the new system. After that, border crossings should be faster and more efficient.

Do I Need to Register or Do Anything in Advance?

No. There is no pre-registration or application required for EES. You’ll complete the process when you arrive at the European border.

That said, another program — called ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) — is also launching in 2025 and will require advance registration. We’ll send out a separate update when that system goes live.

What Countries Will Use EES?

Most Schengen Area and EU countries are participating, including:

France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Greece, Austria, Switzerland, Portugal, Belgium, and others.

A few countries like Ireland, Cyprus, and some in the Balkans are not participating initially.

Will EES Affect My Trip?

For most travelers, the change will be minimal. You won’t need to worry about compliance, and we’ll continue to monitor the process to make sure your experience is smooth.

If you’re traveling with us, we’ll provide you with clear instructions before departure and ensure your itinerary is compatible with any new border control processes.
