The Origin & Historical Events of April

April is a very special month, and we can all agree on this. So let’s start with the very beginning of this month!

Origin of April:

  • Per the Farmers’ Almanac, “the month of April gets its name from the Latin word aperio, meaning “to open [bud],” because plants really begin to grow now.”
  • We all know that April is the fourth month of the year, but that’s only by the Gregorian calendar that we adhere to now. It was previously the fifth month in the earlier Julian calendar.
  • Believe it or not April also only had 29 days, but a 30th day was added when Julius Caesar established the Julian calendar.
  • April was sacred to the goddess Venus back in the time of the Ancient Romans,
  • In the Southern Hemisphere, October is the seasonal equivalent of April.

April Fool’s Day

It’s Okay to Be Silly Once in Awhile” – Beth Elkassih

I love the first day of April… Why?  Because it’s the designated fun fun fun holiday known as April Fool’s Day!

Listen… it’s okay to giggle, laugh, and be silly once in a while.  Life’s too short to be serious all the time, right!  April is the perfect time to be silly and to celebrate the things that bring us joy and make us happy.

Think for a moment. Can you even imagine living without a sense of humor. A world void of laughter or the ability to smile? You can’t because it’s simply not possible. It’s part of our DNA and human evolution.  We’re hard-wired to smile, giggle or laugh.  And you know what!  I wouldn’t have it any other way!

So…  let’s find out more about this serendipitous day in April!

April Fools!

April starts off with the whimsical holiday known as April 1st, aka, April Fools’ Day. No one is sure where this originated from, but some believe it to be inspired by Geoffrey Chaucer’s story in “Canterbury Tales” called “Nun’s Priest’s Tale.”

Traditionally this day is where one can get away with playing ‘pranks’ and even get away with a little bit of making fun with our co-workers, family, or friends.

That said, while April Fools’ Day is the designated day to have fun with someone, let’s not do it in a mean-spirited way.  Instead, use your good-natured humor to make your jokes or shenanigans fun and entertaining, and people will love you for it.
